HER Interactive bans users from discussing LGBT topics on their message boards
I’ve been a big fan of the Nancy Drew games made by HER Interactive since I was in 5th grade. But the other day, I was appalled when I saw the above image on their message boards. Their guidelines strictly forbid its users from discussing LGBT topics on their message boards. And to make matters worse, users who do mention anything about characters being gay even in G rated way are banned from the site. While I understand forbidding sexual content in order to maintain an E rating, discussion of LGBT should not be considered inappropriate. Fans of the games should be able to discuss whatever pairings they want, not just ones that are heterosexual. HER Interactive needs to quit being small-minded and dispose of this rule immediately.
I urge you all to please email HER Interactive at feedback@herinteractive.com and ask that they eliminate this outdated guideline.
Ahhh whenever I see Her being anti LGBT I get so pissed/upset my adrenaline starts pumping and I start shaking lol…anyway I’ve contacted them many times about this and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: their claim to be following ESRB and COPPA guidelines about this is BULLSHIT. Sorry for the caps but I’m on my phone and can’t bold…anyway ESRB themselves has stated that LGBT content does /not/ influence/raise a game’s rating. Discussing a characters orientation is NOT sexually explicit and would certainly fall within ESRB’s E for everyone rating. Even mild sexual themes (and discussion of orientation is not even that) falls under E10+, which many HER games are rated. Not to mention the fact that ESRB ratings are for games, not sites. They don’t rate websites or give out an “ESRB badge of approval” for sites or anything—so for Her to claim they have to abide by certain guidelines on their site is crap.
As for “compliance with COPPA”, as far as I can tell, COPPA deals with what information a site can share about users under 13, and says that users under 13 must have parental permission—it has nothing to do with the actual content of a site.
So sorry, but I call bullshit on their justification of that rule.
Also lol at the whole “Nancy Drew universe” comment—original Nancy Drew books have rampant racism in them, and I don’t see Her abiding by THOSE outdated attitudes.
I would love to see more people email them—I have spoken with Her on this topic many times over the years and nothings changed. The more people talk the them about it, the better.
Reblogging because this is still very important to me! I’ve emailed HeR about the possibility of LGBTQIA representation in the games and received no response whatsoever. If anyone has gotten an answer in regards to this topic, I would love love love to hear it.
